- providing HCP consulting and support materials
- provide continuity of care after discharge from hospital and helping prevent re-admission
- Under nutrition
- Protein - energy malnutrition
- Malabsorption of nutrients
- Coeliac disease – gluten free
- Increased nutritional needs e.g. illness, post-surgery, pregnancy, lactation

Is Sustagen® suitable for people who are lactose intolerant?
Sustagen® is a milk based product therefore is unsuitable for those who are lactose intolerant.
However, Lactase drops are available through pharmacies which can be added to Sustagen® to counteract the lactose.
Does Sustagen® contain Iodine?

It is however suitable for vegetarians who consume dairy products (e.g lacto-ovo or lacto-vegetarians).
Is Sustagen® suitable during Pregnancy?
The National Health & Medical Research Council (the government body responsible for setting the nutrient RDI’s
and upper limits for the Australian & New Zealand populations) has set the following recommendations in
relation to Vitamin A for pregnant women:

For what ages can Sustagen® be recommended?
Sustagen® is not recommended for children under 3 years of age.
For the first time in 15 years the National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) has done an
extensive review of the available scientific knowledge to develop new Nutrient Reference Value
guidelines for the Australian and New Zealand populations(1). These guidelines are designed to assist health
professionals assess the dietary requirements of individuals and groups and as part of this update many of the
Recommended Dietary Intakes have changed(2).

† The above table does not constitute the complete RDI data set for more information visit the NH&MRC website http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications
*RDI Source: NH&MRC ‘Recommended Dietary Intakes for use in Australia 1991’ #RDI Source: NH&MRC ‘Nutrient Reference Values for Australia and New Zealand 2005’ AI Adequate Intake – Used when RDI cannot be determined is based on observed or experimentally determined approximations or estimates of nutrient intake by a group or groups of apparently healthy people that are assumed to be adequate. 1. These recommendations are for healthy people and may not meet the specific nutritional requirements of individuals with various diseases or conditions, pre-term infants or people with specific genetic profiles.
2. The RDI is the average daily intake level that is sufficient to meet the nutrient requirements of nearly all (97-98%) healthy individuals in a
particular life stage and gender group.
Protein plays a vital structural and functional role in the body(3). The NH&MRC have increased the protein
RDI’s by 2% for women and 14% for men. A single serve of Sustagen® Hospital Formula can help people meet these
daily requirements by providing 13.8g per serve of high quality(4) protein constituting 22% RDI for men and 30% RDI for
women.
Dietary Fibre is essential for good digestive health(3). A RDI did not exist under previous guidelines but the
NH&MRC have now identified recommendations for daily fibre intake. A single serve of Sustagen® Hospital Formula Plus Fibre
can help people meet these requirements providing over 3g of dietary fibre per serve which is 10% RDI for men and 12%
RDI for women.
Calcium is vital for bone health along with neuromuscular and cardiac function(3). The NH&MRC have
recognised the importance of this nutrient by increasing the RDI by 20% for both males and females.
Sustagen® is a high calcium product with a single serve of Sustagen® Hospital containing 400mg of Calcium
which constitutes 40% RDI.
Iron plays a central role in oxygen transport within the body(3). Women under 50 years of age have high iron
requirements due to menstrual losses. The NHMRC have identified this greater nutrient need by significantly
increasing the iron RDI for females in this age group. Sustagen® Hospital Formula contains iron at a level of 3mg per
serve providing 17% RDI for women to help them meet their daily requirements.
Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant in the body(3). The NH&RMC have increased the Vitamin C RDI’s by 33%
for women and 11% for men. A single serve of Sustagen® Hospital Formula can help people meet these daily
requirements by providing 20mg of Vitamin C (constituting 44% RDI).

4. The amino acid profile of the dairy protein component provides essential amino acids at appropriate levels for human protein synthesis.
