useful facts

A small proportion of people have allergies and/or intolerances to particular foods or components of certain foods.

Food allergy
An abnormal reaction by the immune system to a component in food, usually a protein. This type of reaction can trigger symptoms such as hives, vomiting, diarrhoea, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis (swelling of the mouth and throat). People with true food allergy must avoid the problem food completely.

Food intolerance (or sensitivity)
Does not involve the immune system. It occurs when a person has an enzyme deficiency (such as in lactose intolerance) or a reaction to either natural or artificial substances in foods. Often reactions of this sort are dose related.

Nuts
No nuts are present at the manufacturing site for Sustagen® powders.

For Sustagen® RTD, nuts are not present in Sustagen® RTD but products containing nuts are made on the same manufacturing line, and therefore nuts are present at the manufacturing site.

Fructose
Fructose malabsorption is a condition where the small intestine is unable to completely absorb fructose (a simple sugar) which can result in symptoms such as bloating, pain, nausea, diarrhoea and/or constipation.

Sustagen® Hospital Formula, Sustagen® Sport and Sustagen® Ready to Drink contain glucose, lactose and sucrose so they ARE suitable for people with fructose malabsorption. Sustagen® Instant Pudding IS also suitable for people with fructose malabsorption as it contains the same three sugars plus modified corn starch.

Sustagen® Hospital Formula Plus Fibre is NOT suitable for people with fructose malabsorption because it contains inulin which is a source of fructans (chains of fructose).

As always, it is recommended that advice on individual dietary needs is sought from an Accredited Practising Dietitian
or medical practitioner.

Caffeine
Sustagen® Vanilla does not contain caffeine. Sustagen® Chocolate
flavour does contain small amounts of caffeine-like substances (theobromine) naturally occurring in the cocoa ingredients.
